The Detroit Lions freed up valuable salary cap space for the 2026 season by restructuring quarterback Jared Goff’s contract ahead of the NFL’s compliance deadline.
Detroit converted $40 million of Goff’s base salary into a signing bonus and added a void year to the deal, a move that clears roughly $32 million in cap space for this season, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. While Goff will still earn the same total amount in 2026, the restructure spreads part of the cap hit into future years.
The Lions were approaching the league’s 4 p.m. deadline for teams to be under the salary cap, but the adjustment to Goff’s contract provided an easy solution. Detroit also has the option to restructure other high-priced deals if additional cap room becomes necessary.
After falling short of expectations in 2025, the Lions are hoping to bounce back next season. With added financial flexibility, Detroit could explore bringing in veteran talent as it looks to strengthen the roster for a potential return to contention.
